ICAI published today the review on how DfID managed exit and transition from traditional aid to new kinds of development partnerships.

The review looked at seven countries and found that very often DfID did not had clear objectives for the transition, and did not communicate well its strategy.

Overall ICAI graded DfID’s performance on exiting and transitioning from countries as ‘Amber-Red’ or as needing significant improvements and recommended that:

  • in the future, DfID should set a point of responsibility for transition and exit and articulate clearer objectives
  • government departments should work better together to manage risk and coordinate communication
  • DfID should clearly communicate to the general public which parts of aid spending will end and which will continue
